A fantastic pair of award winning contemporary homes with sea views in the Conservation Area, Poole.
This site, in a prominent location with sunset views over Poole Harbour towards Brownsea Castle and the quay, was occupied by a detached bungalow of no architectural historic merit.
As the site is located on the edge of the ‘Harbour Heights Conservation Area’, the brief called for architecturally exceptional, distinctive and exciting focal point buildings in order to gain planning approval.

Unconventional design
The creative design avoids the blandness of some of the recently constructed houses nearby. Unlike all the other buildings in Chaddesley Glen, the replacement houses do not front directly onto the street, but are at interesting angles, designed to take advantage of the sun, harbour views and to maximise amenity space.
The houses step down to respond to the sloping topography of the site and context – grounded by their use of ‘solid’ Purbeck stone curved plinths on the ground floor, moving up through crisp white rendered first floors to ‘lightweight’ composite clad second floors.
The design of these contemporary homes was both complex and challenging, so the collaborative involvement with Poole Planners and Building Control was vital to the success of the finished product.
