Restored stone barn with slate roof and large ground floor window

Bagwell Farm

Restoration of a derelict stone barn in Chickerell.
Location Chickerell, Dorset
Status Built
Use Residential
Client Private

Located a short walk from Fleet Lagoon and Chesil Beach on the Jurassic Coast, stands a beautifully reconstructed building. Originally used as a threshing barn, it lay derelict after a fire gutted the roof, interior floors and walls, destroying windows, doors and fittings. WDA sensitively converted the barn into an attractive new home.

A large barn is a cathedral of the countryside. The challenge was to take this substantial open space and transform it into a family home, with individual rooms and full height spaces, without losing its simple rural character and dramatic scale.

Interior design

White walled interiors allow for a simple aesthetic and exposed structural timber elements help the dwelling to retain its previous historic character.

All the floors, beams, rafters and other roof timbers are new or found advertised in local magazines and recycled. The living room and kitchen fireplaces are new, all designed by WDA to inject as much character as possible, but still respecting the original building.
