A contemporary proposal for a much-needed multi-functional Crematorium facility in Powys, located alongside a new natural Green Burial Site and Gardens of Remembrance. Sensitively designed to build upon and enhance the landscape character of the area, the design references local heritage sites and seeks to make a positive improvement to the landscape and local ecology.
The design incorporates two chapels, with separate entrances and facilities for mourners. Within each chapel, full height windows frame far reaching views into the Welsh countryside and a central contemplation area allows visitors an outside space to reflect and take in the fresh air.
The building is nestled within a surrounding earth berm minimising it’s visual impact in the landscape whilst reflecting the historical burial mounds. The roof gives the appearance it is floating, facilitated through high level clerestory glazing allowing light to flood into key areas. The building and landscaping build on the character of the landscape and use a palette of grass, water, stone, timber and brick.
We worked on the project alongside landscape Architects Land Studio in Chester and drainage consultants Ceri Environmental Consulting in Newton.
The proposal was overwhelmingly backed by councilors at planning committee.
