WDA are delighted to have gained planning approval and listed building consent for the restoration and extension of this grade II listed cob cottage.
We had many detailed discussions with the planning and conservation officers to agree the best way forward, enhancing the existing dwelling to allow for modern living whilst respecting the existing building and views from the neighbouring church yard.
The resultant scheme achieves the optimum balance between planning, conservation and client requirements. By using the natural topography of the site, we were able to create a subterranean extension by part burying the building into the hillside, significantly reducing its visual impact from key views and maintaining an appropriate separation from the listed cottage. The approval also allows for the existing, dilapidated lean-to to be replaced.
The extension provides space for a modern, open plan kitchen/diner arrangement with a visual connection to the courtyard. A new green roof ensures the extension appears as part of the garden, and wider landscape, whilst creating biodiversity enhancements to the site.
