Who we are

Established in 1986 by Phil Easton, Western Design is an award winning Dorset based Architectural practice and Conservation Architects with a reputation for excellent design, both locally and nationally.  We strive to produce exciting, creative and inspired design whilst being sympathetic to the local context.   Many of our buildings have received positive recognition in the form of design awards and media coverage. Western Design is a chartered practice with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

Where we work

Located near Blandford, Western Design a work throughout many towns and villages in the South and South West of England such as Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton, Bridport, Dorchester and the New Forest.   We also take on architectural projects in Wiltshire, Hampshire, Devon, Dorset, Somerset and much further afield.  We are currently working on projects in Essex, North Wales, Cornwall, Midlands, Bristol and London.

What we do

Our main emphasis is on design excellence. We are a versatile practice designing in both contemporary and traditional styles. Disciplines include:

New Build & Self-build house design; Conversion, refurbishment and renovation; Luxury houses; Affordable housing; Urban planning, development and multiple housing schemes; Housing association; Sustainable buildings; Extensions, Conservatories and alterations; Educational and school buildings; Community buildings and centres; Landscape design and Interior design.

We also have expertise in listed buildings, conservation areas, restoration and repair of existing buildings. Western Design are Conservation Architects with Principal Architect Phil Easton being accredited on the RIBA Conservation Register. WDA also have an ongoing active interest in sustainable design & technologies. We enjoy the challenge of problematic sites and difficult planning issues.

How can we help you?

We work with a variety of people from individuals with a dream to build their own home, self-builders, developers both large and small  to housing associations, charity organisations and private companies.

Western Design can assist with a number of services associated with any project. These include architectural design, planning applications, liaising with planning officers during the pre-application & planning process, public consultation, building regulations and detailed technical drawings, tendering, on site construction and completion. Western Design have expertise in planning appeals and public consultations.

RIBA Chartered Practice

What is an RIBA Chartered Practice?

In order to qualify as a ‘Chartered Practice’, each separate office within a practice which wishes to register must supply evidence of its compliance with the following criteria.

  • At least one of the full-time principals (Director or Partner) in the architects’ practice must be a Chartered Member of the RIBA.
  • All architectural work must be under the supervision of a Chartered Architect.
  • At least 1 in 8 of all staff employed in the architect’s practice must be a registered architect (on ARB register) or chartered architectural technologist (CIAT member) with RIBA Affiliate membership.
  • At least 1 in 10 of all staff employed in the architect’s practice must be a Chartered Architect (i.e. chartered RIBA member).
  • The architects’ practice must have a current Professional Indemnity Insurance policy appropriate for the work undertaken.
  • The architects’ practice must operate an appropriate Quality Management System.
  • The architects’ practice must operate an appropriate Health and Safety Policy.
  • The architects’ practice must have a written Employment Policy in place which address the principles of the RIBA policy statement on employment.
  • The architects’ practice must have an appropriate CPD Framework in place.
